Lazar earned a PhD from the University of Chicago and an Artist Diploma and Bachelor of Music from Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem. He was a student of Ralph Shapey and Shulamit Ran, and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Pacifica Quartet, and the Jefferson Ensemble in France, among others, have performed his works. He is currently on faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago, Winnetka Campus and is a former lecturer at the division of Arts and Sciences at the University of Chicago and a faculty member at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
