The David Adler Music and Arts Center offers musical instruction to students of all ages and ability levels. Our goal is to provide residents of Lake County with the opportunity to learn music or enhance their musical education. Individual instruction provides the direction necessary for a student to begin musical study or improve upon their skills in a one-on-one learning environment. Our degreed faculty range from music educators to professional musicians who are experts in a variety of musical styles.

Traditional Music Instruction

The Traditional method of music instruction can generally begin when a student is 7 years of age or older; however, students under 7 years can be admitted to traditional individual instruction with approval from a individual music instructor. Lessons are built upon a strong classical foundation but include a variety of other styles.

The David Adler Music and Arts Center offers traditional individual music instruction in piano, violin, viola, electric and acoustic guitar, and voice.

Suzuki Music Instruction

The Suzuki Talent Education Program of the David Adler Music and Arts Center was established in 1980. Like Dr. Suzuki, we believe that music education can be more than learning to play an instrument. Suzuki Talent Education is based on the philosophy that, with proper teaching, proper environment, and encouragement, ALL children can learn to play and read music just as all children can learn to speak and read their native language.

Parents play a vitally important role in this educational model. They must create a home environment in which fine music is frequently heard. This will help the child to become familiar with the basic elements of music: melody, harmony, rhythm, and tone. The first stages of instruction will focus primarily on the development of proper technique and pleasing tone quality. The Suzuki repertoire features folk tunes to facilitate this development. Students learn to play these melodies by listening to them, then imitating what they have heard. Later, when the student has mastered the basics of tone production on his or her instrument, the study of musical notation will begin.

Children as young as 4 or 5 can begin to study an instrument with the Suzuki approach. Parents are required to come to each lesson so that they can effectively help their children practice at home. Parents need not be proficient on their child’s instrument, but should be prepared to learn enough about the instrument to help their child.

Suzuki Instruction is available in violin and piano. Parents are expected to observe and take notes during individual lessons so that they can facilitate efficient daily practice at home.
