Session I          Session II

Summer School Campers – District 70 Summer School Campers may attend Full Day Fridays for an additional $90 fee. Full Day Friday campers will participate in a Fine Arts Friday class created especially for them, including music, art and drama.

Session I: June 11-June 29, 2018

Please note, no class changes permitted after May 19thCamp Adler reserves the right to change classes, schedules, and instructors when enrollment is insufficient.

1st Period: ART           

Color Me a Symphony (Ages 5-7)

Is it music? Is it art? It’s BOTH! Listen to the music of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and more as you create art inspired by music. Explore works of art that have been inspired by music, like Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Blue and Green Music,” and make your own multi-media works of art as you listen.

Food Art (Ages 5-8)

Learn about famous food artists and colorful plates as you become a color wheel Master Chef!  Create mixed media works of art inspired by food, and use potatoes, apples, and even marshmallows to create delectable prints.  It’s art that looks good enough to eat.  Please note these works of art can only be savored with the eyes!

All Together Now! (Ages 8-11)

Exciting art happens when you work together!  Learn about famous friendships in the art world, and artistic collectives like the Guerrilla Girls and les Fauves, “the wild beasts.”  Make amazing collaborative works of art with friends.  It’s art that’s bigger and better than the sum of its parts!

 

 1st Period: MUSIC and DRAMA

Talking Drums (Ages 5-9)

Learn traditional hand drumming rhythms and discover how drums can talk to one another!  Work together to create energetic group performances as you make your drums whisper, shout, and sing.  Practice jazz drumming, marching drum line and African drum circles. Drum along to your favorite popular songs, then create a special performance for the Celebration of the Arts.

Broadway Bound (Ages 7-11)

Have fun while improving your singing, dancing, and acting skills. Performers will explore the world of classical musical theatre and learn what it means to be ‘a triple threat.’ Improve vocal technique through choral singing. Learn choreography, characterization, and classic musical theatre songs for a special musical revue to be performed at the Celebration of the Arts.

 

2nd Period: ART    

The Wacky World of Dr. Seuss (Ages 5-7)

Explore the colorful characters and landscapes of your favorite Dr. Seuss books in this messy mixed-media class.  Read your favorite stories, draw your own original characters, create sculptures of Truffula Trees, and paint fantastic landscapes in this zany and fun-filled class.

Green Art (Ages 5-9)

It’s fun being green!  Make something new with old materials in this messy mixed-media class.  Bring your recyclables to class, where you’ll transform them into colorful prints, sculptures, and collages.  Learn about painters who treasured our environment, and learn how you can help preserve our beautiful planet.

Where In the World is David Adler (Ages 8-11)

Detectives get ready for an artistic adventure across Europe!  Explore the mysterious post card collection David Adler acquired during his travels.  Discover clues in each post card, learn about new countries and their most famous artists, and use your new knowledge to deduce Adler’s location!  Draw and paint your own postcards and make projects inspired by the countries you investigate in this class that’s part drawing and painting, part art appreciation, and one big mysterious adventure!

 

2nd Period: MUSIC   

X is for Xylophone (Ages 5-8)

Combine percussion with melody and what do you get? A class full of fun songs and cool instruments! Learn songs from around the world as you learn to play the xylophone and other unique percussion instruments. Build a xylophone band as you work with the class to make your own, brand-new original xylophone song.

Adler Singers (Ages 8-11)

Are you ready to join the awesome Adler Choir? Learn appropriate techniques for singing in choirs and musicals. Work on the fundamentals of healthy singing: breath support, alignment, placement, relaxation and articulation.  Then, use your new skills to create dreamy harmonies and exciting arrangements for a special performance at the Celebration of the Arts.

 

2nd Period: DRAMA

Curtain Up: The Very Hungry Caterpillar  (Ages 5-7)

Mixed-up chameleons, grouchy ladybugs, and very busy spiders make this drama class full of movement and fun.  Explore the characters in Eric Carle’s famous books and create your own busy, colorful characters.  In this class tailored to younger actors, campers will develop confidence through improvisation and playful voice and movement games.

 

3rd Period: ART

Funky Fabric (Ages 5-8)

Cut it, shape it, paint it, pin it—sometimes even wear it!   There are a million ways to have fun manipulating fabric. Explore printing, dip-dying, and painting as you create art from unlikely materials.

Just Like Hue (Ages 7-11)

Budding artists used to hone their craft by copying the style and technique of their teachers. Explore the work of old masters and contemporary treasures as you copy your favorite masterpieces and create original work in the style of your favorite artist. Explore drawing, painting, printmaking, and more!

Clay Creations (Ages 8-11)

Use your imagination to create with clay. Sculpt using your fingers, hands, and simple tools. Learn artistic techniques and methods like pinch, coil, and slab building. Build pots, critters, and abstract masterpieces that we will display at the Celebration of the Arts.

 

3rd Period: MUSIC   

Pop! (Ages 5-8)

We love singing along to the radio! In this class, learn about melody, harmony, musical notation, and rhythm as we learn what makes your favorite songs “pop.” Sing popular songs that have stood the test of time, as well songs on the radio today. Prepare a peppy performance for the Celebration of the Arts.

Aloha, Adler (Ages 8-11) 

It’s time to get tropical! Learn the basics of ukulele and Hawaiian percussion in this group class for older campers. Read chords and rhythms as you explore the sounds and culture of Hawaii. By the end of camp, our tropical ensemble will have enough experience to perform together at the Celebration of the Arts. Instruments are provided.

 

3rd Period: DRAMA

Improv! (Ages 8-11) 

Get ready to laugh your way through the summer! Learn the building blocks of improvisation and techniques for successful scene work. Learn how to initiate scenes, be a good scene partner, and create off-the-cuff stories with clear beginnings, middles and ends. Explore the basics of improv teamwork: agreement, active listening, using your environment, understanding stage status, narrative, and supporting your teammates! Campers will showcase their new skills at the Celebration of the Arts. No experience necessary!

 

4th Period: ART

Clay Creations (Ages 5-7)

Use your imagination to create with clay. Sculpt using your fingers, hands, and simple tools. Learn artistic techniques and methods like pinch, coil, and slab building. Build pots, critters, and abstract masterpieces that we will display at the Celebration of the Arts.

Under Construction! 3-D Art (Ages 5-8)

Caution!  Artists working ahead! Put on your hardhat and get building in this class devoted to 3-D projects.  Make pop-up art, sculptures, structures and more.  And even learn how to create 3-D effects in your two-dimensional drawings and designs.

Fashion Finders (Ages 8-11)

Are you a budding fashion designer? Campers will explore the design process as they sketch ideas, thrift and sift through materials, and create their own unique hats, clothes, and accessories. Showcase your runway-worthy creations at the Celebration of the Arts.

 

4th Period: MUSIC       

The Magical Musical Time Machine (Ages 5-8)

Go back in time… way back, as you explore each of the major composers and musical instrument families through listening, stories, coloring, and drama games. Discover how to listen to all kinds of music with a ‘musician’s ear.’  Listen to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals, then bring famous songs and unusual friends at campinstruments to life through exciting games.

Song Writing (Ages 9-11)

Write the next great “Song of the Summer” in this class for older singers and musicians.  Explore the structure and composition of popular hits, while gaining valuable tools and techniques for your own song-writing process.  Explore spoken word, Hamilton, and the process of choosing the right words for your beats and melodies.  Then, work together to create a performance for Celebration of the Arts.  Instruments are welcome, but not required—everyone’s voice will be used!

4th Period: DRAMA

Acting Ensemble:  It’s All Greek to Me (Ages 7-11)

The Adler Acting Ensemble goes “Greek” while exploring monsters, gods, goddesses, and the superstars of Greek mythology.  Learn the fundamentals of the hero’s journey, and discover what it means to be a hero today.  Play acting games, use voice and movement work to bring mythological beasts and beings to life, and learn the skills you need to go into any audition or rehearsal with confidence. It’s a class of mythic proportion!

1st Period: ART

Color Me a Symphony (Ages 5-7)

Sketch & Paint (Ages 5-8)

Get ready to move beyond doodling! Draw and sketch with wet materials: ink, watercolors, acrylics, and markers, and dry materials: charcoal, graphite and conté crayons. Learn techniques for quick sketches and more complicated drawings. Get messy, and create a colorful sketchbook of your very own drawings and paintings.

Architects Ahead! (Ages 8-11)

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of David Adler’s home as you explore Adler Center treasures that are hidden in plain sight!  Learn to sketch structures and design your own buildings and cities.  Then, learn about David’s sister Frances, an interior designer, and design your very own rooms.

Xylophone Cyclone! (Ages 5-8)

Combine percussion with melody and what do you get? A class full of fun songs and cool instruments! Learn songs from around the world as you learn to play the xylophone and other unique percussion instruments. Build a xylophone band as you work with the class to make spooky sound-effects and a brand-new original xylophone song.

To Broadway, And Beyond! (Ages 7-11)

Performers will explore the world of contemporary musical theatre and learn what it means to be “a triple threat.” Improve vocal technique through choral singing. Learn choreography, characterization, and great musical theatre songs for a special musical revue to be performed at the Celebration of the Arts.

Use your imagination to create with clay. Sculpt using your fingers, hands, and simple tools. Learn artistic techniques and methods like pinch, coil, and slab building. Build pots, critters, and abstract masterpieces that to be displayed at the Celebration of the Arts.

Art Experiments (Ages 5-8)

Artists will love concocting creative experiments in the Adler Art Lab! Use a variety of exciting materials to make bubbly, messy, and surprising art. Explore today’s coolest art experiments– THEN–make some experimental art of your very own!

All-American Artists (Ages 8-11)

It’s time for a summer vacation!  In this mixed media class explore American artists like Warhol, Whistler, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grant Wood, Hopper, and many, many more. Paint your way across the country as you take a visual road trip.  Explore drawing, painting, sculpture, and more.  By the time you’re done, you’ll have a map of American’s greatest artists!

 

2nd Period: MUSIC

Disney Sing-a-long (Ages 5-8)

Explore Disney classics as you sing and move in this musical theatre class for younger campers. Performers will explore the wonderful world of Disney and improve vocal technique through choral singing. Learn simple choreography and characterization while preparing a Disney tune for the Celebration of the Arts.

Song Writing (Ages 9-11)

Discover your inner super-hero in this class for younger actors.  Find your own unique superpower, make a costume fit for a hero, and go on amazing adventures with your friends and sidekicks!  Using improvisation and playful voice and movement games, campers will develop confidence as they discover the joy of theatre.

 

3rd Period: ART

Mixed Media Modernism (Ages 5-7)

Play with colors, symbolism, dreams, and new materials as you explore Modernism. Discover how modern artists like Cezanne and Van Gogh, Munch, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Kahlo worked in new ways and captured the spirit of their age. Then use all sorts of messy media to express your own spirit!

Mexico! (Ages 5-8)

Discover the stunning colors of Mexico in this mixed media class.  Explore the pyramids in Teotihuacan, and learn about famous Mexican artists like Kahlo and Rivera as you create landscapes, self-portraits, murals, while soaking-up the culture of this artistic country.

Learn basic music theory concepts like scales, intervals, harmony, key signatures, and sight-reading. Then, use your new skills to sing musical theatre, pop, rock, and classic songs you’ll love to perform at Celebration of the Arts.

 

4th Period: ART

Outlandish Landscapes (Ages 5-8)

This mixed media class will combine your love of the outdoors with your love of art. Create fabulous works of art inspired by nature, and works of art that are made of nature. Spend time trekking outside (weather permitting) and create artwork using foraged materials. Use your creativity to create some imaginary landscapes of your own.

Magnificent Murals (Ages 5-9)Junior Counselor Mural in downtown Libertyville's Artist Alley

Be a LARGE part of Camp Adler as you help create several large murals to be displayed at the Celebration of the Arts. Learn about the process of designing and painting a large artwork, and have fun collaborating with others to make a piece of art much larger than any individual! Learn to paint large and be a part of Camp Adler’s official Mural Crew.

Function, Function: Functional Art (Ages 9-11)

Make beautiful and useful everyday objects in this functional art class. Learn about the Bauhaus School and explore the functional art movement from fashion and advertising to architecture and currency design! Bowls, baskets, chairs, hats — the possibilities are endless as you create objects you’ll love to use.

 

4th Period: MUSIC

Stomp! (Ages 5-8)

Boom, beat, bop and bang as you learn rhythms and introductory percussion skills in Adler’s own percussion group! Practice working together to create group rhythms and patterns that “talk” to one another.  Create a special performance for the Celebration of the Arts where you’ll drum on buckets, garbage can lids, and other unusual percussive instruments!

Adler Luau (Ages 8-11)

Mysterious things have been happening at Camp Adler, but our team of spies and detectives are ready to find clues, interview suspects, and crack the case! Play acting games, use voice and movement work to create suspicious characters…and brilliant detectives. Learn the skills you need to go into any audition or rehearsal with confidence, while putting your brain to the test!
